Economic and social development

TCCT encourages a development focus to address the socio-economic issues that are barriers to our successful participation in this great region.
We are small in number but contribute significantly to the wider economy through involvement in sport, culture, business and man-power.

Ministry of Pacific Island Affairs

The Regional Manager for the Ministry of Pacific Island Affairs, Ámanaki Misa, is from our local community and his leadership in the local office assists all the Pacific communities of the region. We have a strong relationship with MPIA and regularly call upon the team to help us with a range of issues.

Social issues

The elimination of domestic violence and child abuse are our main focus through the SKIP programme and fanau workshops we deliver throughout the region. We are the main facilitators between fanau abuse victims and agencies and regularly called upon to assist those in the community who have suffered severe family problems.

Earthquake Recovery

TCCT is involved in delivering “Earthquake Recovery” advice and support to the 500-strong Tongan fanau groups in the Canterbury region.
The Ministry of Social Development has provided funding for TCCT to provide:

  • Advocacy support
  • Fanau advice and guidance
  • Translation and assistance with inter-agency support
  • Facilitating sessions for those worst affected
  • Brokerage and facilitation to gain appropriate assistance
